The Italian National Research Council (CNR) of Pisa and Florence is taking part in the
Osaka Expo with a multidisciplinary approach and language designed for the general
public, enriched by video contributions. We will provide concrete examples of how our
research covers the entire chain, from basic science to therapy. We will present innovative
projects in the biomedical sector that reflect a typically Italian and Tuscan model of well-
being: from FLASH radiotherapy, which promises to significantly reduce toxicity and
treatment times for cancer patients, to the Active Aging pilot project, which studies the
impact of physical activity on elderly and healthy people and investigates neuroplasticity,
i.e. the resilience of the brain, which is fundamental for both childhood development and
cognitive functions in old age. We will also talk about personalised medicine, in particular
therapeutic drug monitoring, without neglecting a reference to our historical heritage,
taking us as far back as the ancient Via Francigena pilgrimage route. Finally, we will take
the opportunity to highlight the similarities between Italy and Japan in facing public health
challenges.
